The Two-Child Paradox: Dichotomy and Ambiguity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Given that one of the children in a two-child family is a boy, what are the chances that the other is also a boy. The intuitive answer is 50 : 50. More careful investigation leads us to a 1-in-3 chance. We investigate circumstances under which these answers are correct. The imposition of further conditions yields some very surprising results. To my sons Owen and Andrew, both born on Tuesday, one on Christmas Day.

Ambiguity aversion in a delay analogue of the Ellsberg Paradox
Decision makers are often ambiguity averse, preferring options with subjectively known probabilities to options with unknown probabilities. The Ellsberg paradox is the best-known example of this phenomenon. Ambiguity has generally been studied in the domain of risky choice, and many theories of ambiguity aversion deal with ambiguity only in this context. However, ambiguity aversion may occur in...
متن کاملA Simplied Axiomatic Approach to Ambiguity Aversion
This paper takes the Anscombe-Aumann framework with horse and roulette lotteries, and applies the Savage axioms to the horse lotteries and the von Neumann-Morgenstern independence axiom to the roulette lotteries. The resulting representation of preferences yields a subjective probability measure over states and two utility functions, one governing risk attitudes and one governing ambiguity atti...
متن کاملBertrand’s Paradox Revisited: More Lessons about that Ambiguous Word, Random
The Bertrand paradox question is: “Consider a unit-radius circle for which the length of a side of an inscribed equilateral triangle equals 3 . Determine the probability that the length of a ‘random’ chord of a unit-radius circle has length greater than 3 .” Bertrand derived three different ‘correct’ answers, the correctness depending on interpretation of the word, random. Here we employ geomet...
